Challenges

The fundamental challenge is securing enough funds each year to pay for this effort. The irony is that the more our teams win, the more expenses are incurred to get them to championship games in Las Vegas and Florida. We don’t have a parent base that can afford these costs.

For insurance alone, SF Junior 49ers has to pay $11,000 to the Pop Warner Conference. With our target population of low-income inner city children, our parents are not in a position to pay the standard annual registration fee for Pop Warner of $225. We have modified the charge to $110 for our football teams and $95 for our spirit squads, which is still a challenge for some families. For youth recruited from within Public Housing, we have been using Drug Elimination money provided by the Housing Authority to pay for their registration. However, these funds are slated to be cut. The Parks and Recreation Department supports in the form of discount rental for the practice fields at Crocker-Amazon and for Kezar Stadium. Nevertheless, we need money for everything related to sponsoring a team and hosting games: uniforms, replacing aging equipment (ex. helmets cost $150-$175 each), to pay for Medic coverage at each game if a volunteer is not available, for travel expenses, tape, ice packs, etc. We use grass-roots fundraising efforts with raffle tickets and our snacks concession, but our community is a poor community.

A driving force behind this effort has been TURF (Together United Recommitted Forever).
